Recommended Tools List
Here is my list of recommended must-have tools for any dollhouse assembly. Experiment with your builds and find the tools that work best for you. Many times it can take several dollhouse builds before your able to find just the right items that will make your project move along easier and quicker.

Binder Clips
These clips can be found in various sizes at your local office supply store. They are great for clamping together laminated parts like doors and windows.

Brown Parcel Paper
You can use this paper to cover your work area and also for making templates of your roof panels for shingling. It comes in inexpensive large rolls so you will probably have enough of it for a lifetime of dollhouse building. These rolls are found in the paint section of the hardware store but they can also be found in the mailing department of your office supply store.

Disposable Microwave Containers
Make sure you get them with a lid and in multiple sizes so you can use them to store your pre-mixed stain or paint. They also store mixed dollhouse stucco and other materials that you have left over for future use. Disposable plastic cups are great for washing out your paint brushes.

Drop Cloths
You can buy the drop cloths that are found in the paint department but you can also use cheap shower curtain liners to cover your work area and make it water proof.

Dust Mask
You will need a dust mask during sanding.

Easy Cutter
This is a must have tool for cutting miniature lumber. It is ideal for trim and even has a measurement plate for miter cuts.

Fast Grab Tacky Glue
This glue can be used to apply siding that is installed under components. It is thick and grabs quickly. It also has a shorter drying time than regular tacky glue.

Foam And Craft Paint Brushes
It's best to buy an assortment of paint brushes because each one has its specialty. Foam brushes are used for stains or to create textures. Soft bristle brushes are best for painting and coarser, larger brushes can be used to apply thick wallpaper paste. Make sure that there are also plenty of fine tip brushes in your assortment as you will be needing them for painting details and doing touch ups.

Glue Stick
Use a glue stick for easy wallpaper repairs or to apply wallpaper borders. Glue sticks also work great to attach wallpaper to smaller scale dollhouses.

Hand Held Mirror
These small mirrors will allow you to look into tight corners or areas that are only visible through dollhouse windows.

Hand Held Weights
Five pounds is suffice for a dollhouse. These inexpensive weights are perfect for any type of surface that needs to be held down with something heavy while glue dries. They are covered in a soft rubber material so they will not damage finishes in your dollhouse. Make sure to buy two of them so you clamp your surfaces evenly.

Hot Melt Glue Gun
Hot melt glue is used for applying shingles and sometimes siding to your dollhouse. It is non-water based so it will not warp thin wood veneers. It also dries instantly preventing shingles and siding from shifting out of place.

Though hot melt glue is always used to apply shingles, whether you are glueing them straight to your dollhouse roof or to a paper template, it is not necessarily always used to apply siding. If you apply your siding after your components, then you can use hot melt glue but if you apply your siding under your components, you should use a tacky glue instead, for a stronger and more durable hold.

Hot Melt Glue Gun Sticks
They do not only work for your hot melt glue gun but they also make great clamps for flooring and ceiling trim. Buy them in various sizes so you always have one that works for the areas you wish to clamp.

Lightweight Spackling Compound
Spackle is the best product for hiding gaps on a dollhouse. It is sandable, paintable and goes on smooth.

A rubber mallet is a must for tapping in stubborn tabs into slots.

Masking Tape
Masking tape is perfect for clamping your dollhouse together while glue dries. Most blue Painters Tape can be used to clamp walls that are wallpapered. Make sure you read your tapes instructions to find out whether it can be used on wallpaper or not.

Nail Files
Nail files are the perfect size for sanding tight inaccessible areas like the insides of gingerbread trim. Emory boards are the perfect width for drawing siding lines.

Parchment Paper
Parchment paper allows for easy clean up. Cover the area you will be applying wallpaper paste on to prevent sticky messes. Position freshly painted dollhouse parts on it to allow drying time, and they will not stick to it.

You will need it for drawing siding and shingling guide lines. You also want to number and label your parts in pencil so you can easily erase the marks later. The eraser ends of pencils are ideal for helping to punch out parts from their sheets and saving your fingertips in the process.

Plastic Clamps
These clamps work well for clamping parts that fit at an angle to eachother. They also help hold angles square as glue dries.

These are perfect for filling in tiny gaps with spackle.

Try to find a ruler that is metal and exactly one inch in width. That way you will have the perfect spacer for drawing shingle lines.

Sanding Block
This will save your fingers and make sanding go much easier and quicker.

Medium to fine grit sandpaper must be used to smooth down all edges of your dollhouse parts. It is also used to sand down protruding tabs or areas were wood filler was used.

You will need scissors to cut wallpaper, shingles and siding to size. It's actually a good idea to buy a large size and a small, pointy tip pair.

Stainable Wood Filler
You will need wood filler to hide gaps on stained finishes. The best wood filler is Minwax Stainable Wood Filler. It takes stain pretty well and is perfect on natural birch veneer shingles.

Styrofoam Plates And Bowls
Disposable plates and bowls are perfect as paint palettes. You can also use them to to mix paints together. When your done, you just toss them away and avoid having to wash paint into your sink after every use.

Tacky Glue
Tacky glue is the main glue that you will use on your dollhouse. Tacky glue dries clear and can be used on painted or stained parts. It's thick and adheres to wood very well.

Tacky Glue Pen
Tacky glue in a pen is perfect for more control and precision when applying glue to small areas, like window glass.

Long tweezers will help you access areas deep in your dollhouse and short, smaller tweezers will help you handle small parts like brads and doorknobs.

Utility Knife
A sharp utility knife is ideal for trimming down parts that aren't fitting just right.

Wallpaper Paste
Wallpaper mucilage is the first choice for applying wallpaper but you can substitute with Yes Paste or real life size wallpaper paste.

Wood Glue
You will want to go over all of your dollhouse wall joints with wood glue. Wood glue is the right consistancy to seep into all of the areas in the joints that tacky glue might have missed. Use wood glue on your unfinished dollhouse shell only. It does not dry clear so you can not use it on painted or stained surfaces, as it will be visible.

X-acto Knife
This knife is needed for cutting out wallpaper from windows and doors. If you place a light behind your dollhouse, you will be able to easily see through your wallpaper and identify where the covered openings are.

Optional Tools
If you want to buy power tools, the only ones that would be recommended for a tab and slot dollhouse, is a palm sander and a rotary tool.

Palm sanders are great for sanding down doors more quickly than doing it by hand. They also work well for quickly smoothing down protruding tabs in floors.

A rotary tool can make detail work a lot easier and kit bashing go a lot quicker.

This is the most important tool required for making miniature furniture. If only a handsaw is owned, intricate cuts are virtually impossible. Mitring the ends will become stressful and as the craftsman progresses with the work, other more difficult and detailed operations would surface.
Choosing a jigsaw with a rotating electric motor is advised because it reduces unnecessary vibrations that will occur if a vibrating electric motored jigsaw is used.
Power Hand Drill
This is the second most important tool for miniature furniture making. It helps speed up the works while ensuring accuracy. The chosen power drill must have a variable speed and this choice is preferable because it broadens the drills usefulness.
A 'must have 'attachment for a power drill is a stand which allows the hand drill to be used as a drill press. This enables holding the drill down at any angle giving the craftsman free hands to work with.
Other attachments may seem tempting to the crafter but the drill stand and a router attachment will suffice.

The lathe is the third most essential tool required for miniature furniture making. If the crafter intends to make period style furniture with turned legs, posts, etc., this tool must be part of his collection of tools. On the other hand, if furniture items to be made are the basics - square shapes and simple furniture parts - then the use of this tool can be optional.
Some may attempt to carve curved intricate pieces by hand, but doing it successfully this way will waste a considerable amount of time, plus only very skilful craftsmen can do this manually and get it right.
A moderately fast speed lathe will do for all the required woodworking, and a slower speed lathe is great for any form of metal works that may be needed for this creative task of miniature furniture making.
Circular Saw
Today you will find miniature circular saws that enables a miniature furniture craftsman get perfectly straight cuts on wood, up to about a quarter of an inch thick (8mm). And some circular saws come as attachments to a lathe.
It is advisable to choose saws that work with an adjustable blade angle of 45 degrees. With this type of circular saw, one can make perfect mitre cuts which allows for wood edges to be bevelled.

Pin Vice
An inexpensive hole drilling tool, the pin vice is excellent to have handy when intricate works require precision and accuracy. For example, if 2 holes at the ends of very narrow dowels must meet accurately, a pin vice will allow this to be done effortlessly.
This tool is good for fitting into hard to reach places that the electric hand drill may not reach. So this makes it a valuable addition to the larger hand drill.

Mitre Box
Just as a pin vice can drill tiny holes more easily and accurately than a hand drill, so will a mitre box mitre wood ends more easily than the jigsaw.
This tool can cut wood pieces at a variety of angles, though it is only useful for very small pieces that the jigsaw is too large to handle. The jigsaw only handles larger pieces of furniture parts.
For example, when making miniature picture frames for a miniature house or room, the mitre box will cut mitres for the frame (imagine how tiny these can be), as well as small items like the door frames, picture moldings, baseboards etc.
Though owning this tool is not a requirement for making miniature furniture, a craftsman will find that working without owning this tool makes the job slow and will likely cause inaccuracies.

Miniature furniture collection

Miniature CollectiblesMiniature furniture pieces crafted painstakingly and perfectly are definitely not toys for children to play with and then toss away in some place apart from its display position. Children of collectors learn this soon enough when they attempt to treat these valuable pieces as toys.
Building tiny pieces of furniture is not simple. Neither are there many time saving ideas or short-cuts. The emphasis is quality rather than quantity as many styles may take days or even weeks to construct.
Making miniature furniture is an age long hobby, and today it is a lucrative venture, because more and more new age collectors are seeking to acquire this unique and exquisite craft of the bygone era.

Here are some items that you might consider having if you are planning on finishing a dollhouse:

Toolbox: You'll need one of these to keep your other tools and items in and organized. I like to use a tackle box for my smaller items because of the different small compartments and a regular toolbox for my larger items. It helps me to keep two so I have an easier time finding what I need. You can purchase small toolboxes and tackle boxes but I found that I soon ran out of room so purchasing a larger one instead is recommended.
Scissors: Have several sizes ranging from tiny scissors for detailed cuts to larger ones for cutting flooring or wallpaper.
Tweezers: Keep pointed ones and angled ones to serve every purpose. They don't have to be expensive and I find that beauty tweezers work fine.
Tooth Picks: You'll need these to apply glue on the tip and pick up smaller items with when tweezers aren't small enough and to place small glue dots on smaller items.
Art Brushes: Purchase several sizes of these as you will need these for different purposes.
Good White Glue: For gluing. Quickgrab cement by 3C for clapboard and flooring. Bond 527 by Bond Adhesives for gluing hardware to wood (dries clear). Elmer's Carpenter Glue for gluing wood to wood and shingles (dries yellow). Minigraphics Wallpaper Mucilage for wallpaper.
Monoject Glu Gun: To use when small amounts of glue are needed.http://i19.ebayimg.com/03/s/000/77/4a/9d6d_2.JPG
Pencils: Pencils will be needed to make notes or marks which can easily be erased.
Pencil Sharpener: To (well obviously) sharpen your pencils.
Rulers: Either plastic or metal (so edges won't dull) for measuring and making straight edges.
X-acto Knife: For making small and exact cuts. You'll also need the blades.
Wire Cutter: For cutting wire and thin spindles etc.
Needle Nose Pliers: To hold pieces securely.
Small Hammer: To nail without damaging the wood. I use a craft hammer that can be purchased at any art supply store.
Tape: Used to hold things in place without it being permanent. Having both Masking and Scotch tape is best. I also like to use the blue painters tape because it comes off easilly without damaging or peeling paint.
Sand Paper: Be carefull only to use fine sand paper (#220). Different sized emery boards work well also especially on clapboard.
Small Miter Box: For cutting miniatures and porch parts etc.
Razor Blades: Single edge ones work better for more control when cutting.
Foam Meat Trays: To glue on.
Cutting Block: Wood or plastic are okay. Glass gives you less control. You'll need one to make cuts on.
Rags & Paper Towels: Moisten these to clean up glue and paint right away.

(http://www.allthingsmini.com/resources/Tools.htm)Tools and Supplies for the Job

by Marie WendtAs a beginner to the wonderful miniatures hobby, I'm sure you have a hundred questions on how to get started; I know I did. "What tools will I need?" is, I'm sure, one of those questions and is a very common one. Well, ask no more. I've composed a couple of different lists to get you well on your way to constructing your first miniatures projects with ease. The "Must Have" Tool and Supply List
This is a list of the 'basics' that will get you started and how you'll use them.
Protective Eyewear, Masks, and Band-Aids
Doesn't really need explanation. Always a good idea to wear protective eyewear and mask when sanding or cutting wood to protect yourself from dust getting in your eyes and nasal passages, and wear a protective mask when working with paints, stains, varnishes, etc.

Sand Paper and Sanding Block
Used in all instances where smoothing or shaping the surface of wood is needed. Also used to smoothe out applications of wood filler (see below).

Used to hold a project together while the glue dries. Certain clamps also help keep a project "square".

Square or T-Square
Used to ensure a project is "square" and to ensure perfect right angles.

Masking Tape
Serves as an extra pair of hands to help hold a project together; i.e. dry fitting a dollhouse kit. Also can be used in place of clamps if necessary.

Ruler and Tape Measure
Pretty self-explanatory, these help you to make necessary measurements during a project.

Paint Brushes - Sponge and Bristle
Sponge brushes are an inexpensive solution and are disposable, can also be rinsed free of water-based paints and saved for the next project. Bristle brushes of varying sizes are commonly used when a finer finish is desired; i.e. detailed painting of trim work, furniture, etc.

Drawing lines for cuts, marking kit pieces and making project notes.

Xacto Knife
Used for cutting and trimming of small wood pieces, wallpaper, flooring, etc.

Wood Glue
The main staple of dollhouse makers. Titebond is a great product.

Tacky Glue
A secondary glue that is commonly used for interior trim work, doll making, plant making, etc.

Wallpaper Paste & Old Credit Card
There are several different opinions on what exactly to use. Many use a product called Wallpaper Mucilage. I prefer "real" wallpaper paste from my local home improvement store because I get more for my money and it works just as good. The credit card is used to smoothe out the wrinkles in the wallpaper when it is placed on the wall.

Wood Filler
Primarily used when assembling die-cut dollhouse kits, wood filler will help fill in all the gaps, tab holes, and corners where the kit pieces do not connect smoothly. Wood filler will be your best friend if you're a fan of die-cut kits. Also used to fill in holes made by counter-sunk nails used on the heavier duty dollhouse kits.

Mitre Box and Saw
An invaluable tool for cutting 45 degree angles for wood mouldings. Some are even made to cut an assortment of different angles that may be needed.

Hand Drill or Dremel Rotary Tool w/ bit set
An affordable option, a hand drill will primarily be used to pre-drill nail holes during the assembly of a dollhouse kit. For versatility, and a higher price tag, the Dremel Rotary Tool is an indispensable tool for your toolbox. It will pre-drill holes, sand, carve, cut...you name it! I have two!

Paper Towels
Paper towels for quick clean-ups!

Hammer and Finishing Nails
Finishing nails are often required when building the more substantial dollhouse kits made from MDF or plywood.

The "Add-Ons" List
This is a compiled list of items you'll find in my workroom that have become invaluable to me.
Easy Cutter
A hand-held miracle tool when cutting small wood trim pieces at angles. Much quicker than the mitre box and saw.

Scroll, Band, and Jig Saws
Invaluable power tools to make your large wood cutting job a breeze!

Angle Ruler
A nifty gadget I got in the drafting supply section of my local hobby shop. It has a screw that loosens and tightens in order to adjust a moving arm into the right position of any given angle. Great for designing your own dollhouse plans.

Rotary Cutter and Mat
I use mine when working with fabric treatments like bedding, window coverings, doll clothes, etc.

Box Cutter
A larger, more heavy-duty knife than the Xacto. Will cut thicker woods and plastic.

Putty Knife
Makes applying wood filler easier in some situations.

Wood Carving Tools
Other than wood carving, I've used mine to scrape away old glue, excess wood filler, smoothe out hard wood edges and to pry open cans of paint, stain, shellac, etc.

Large, Old Bristle Brush
2"-3" is a good size for sweeping out debris from your project.

Used for punching holes. I use mine for pre-punching little holes for my brass brads when electrifying a dollhouse.

Compressed Air
Gets much faster results than that large, old bristle brush when it comes to debris removal; especially in small places. Also great for dusting acetate window panes.

Rubber Gloves
A nice thing to have on hand (no pun intended) when painting, staining, varnishing, etc.

Fig Rule
A nifty little invention by Laura Figg. A three sided ruler with each side representing a different miniatures scale. Fits right in your purse!

Rubber Bands
You never know when you might need one.

Hot Glue Gun
Great for landscaping and floral arrangements. Can also be used for attaching window treatments.

Used as a surface to glue wood flooring and carpeting to in order to avoid permanently attaching your flooring to the actual floor of the dollhouse. This will enable you to slide your floor in and out of your dollhouse should you need to access your electrical wiring that you may run underneath it (see A Beginners Guide to Dollhouse Electrification).

As always...a good note to remember... it's Always work in a WELL ventilated area!
