    Active and passive

    Chủ động và bị động



    Động từ chủ động diễn tả hành động của chủ ngữ còn động từ bị động diễn tả những gì xảy ra với chủ ngữ
    Example:

    After the accident, someone called the police and they arrested the drunk driver.
    After the accident, the police were called and the drunk driver was arrested.

    Tân ngữ của động từ chủ động trở thành chủ ngữ của động từ bị động. Nội động từ không thể chia ở thể bị động.
    Example:
    We clear the table and wash the dishes. --> The table is cleared and the dishes are washed.

    Công thức chung thể bị động: be + Past Participle.
    Example:
    You have to rewrite the first paragraph. --> The first paragraph has to be rewritten.


    Sau động từ bị động ta có thể dùng cấu trúc by+ tân ngữ bị động.
    Example:
    My car was repaired by Andrew.
    Some roads are blocked by fallen trees.


    Thì bị động:

    Bị động ở thì hiện tại đơn: am/is/are + past participle
    ACTIVE: You place an order one day and they deliver your groceries the next.
    PASSIVE: An order is placed one day and your groceries are delivered the next.

    Bị động ở thì hiện tại tiếp diễn: am/is/are + being + past participle
    ACTIVE: They are building a new school and creating two new roads for access.
    PASSIVE: A new school is being built and two new roads are being created for access.

    Bị động ở thì hiện tại hoàn thành: have/has + been + past participle
    ACTIVE: I've prepared the turkey and peeled the potatoes.
    PASSIVE: The turkey has been prepared and the potatoes have been peeled.

    Bị động ở thì quá khứ đơn: was/were + past participle
    ACTIVE: Air Canada cancelled our flight and stranded us in Vancouver.
    PASSIVE: Our flight was cancelled and we were stranded in Vancouver.

    Bị động ở thì quá khứ tiếp diễn: was/were + being + past participle
    ACTIVE: They were cleaning the floor and washing the windows earlier today.
    PASSIVE: The floor was being cleaned and the windows were being washed earlier today.

    Bị động ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành: had + been + past participle
    ACTIVE: Everyone had warned me about the weather before I went to Scotland.
    PASSIVE: I had been warned about the weather before I went to Scotland.

    Fill the gaps with the correct tenses (active or passive voice)

    1. In the year 122 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian (visit) his provinces in Britain.

    1. On his visit, the Roman soldiers told him that Pictish tribes from Britain's north had (attack) them.

    1. So Hadrian (give) the order to build a protective wall across one of the narrowest parts of the country.

    1. After 6 years of hard work, the Wall (finish) in 128.

    1. It (be) 117 kilometres long and about 4 metres high.

    1. The Wall (guard) by 15,000 Roman soldiers.

    1. Every 8 kilometres there was a large fort in which up to 1,000 soldiers (find) shelter.

    1. The soldiers watched over the frontier to the north and checked the people who (want) to enter or leave Roman Britain.

    1. In order to pass through the Wall, people had to go to one of the small forts that (serve) as gateways.
