    At the Weekend

Here's one thing you don't have to worry about at the weekend: time. No need to rush. Breakfast is a real pleasure. You've got two days to do whatever pleases you. Forty-eight hours devoted to your hobbies.

Perhaps you play a musical instrument? Like the saxophone . . . The piano . . . Maybe even the flute . . . Or the violin. Ooh, that sounds like you're torturing a cat! Whatever the instrument you play, you'll have to learn to read sheet music or you'll never improve.

Lovers of the outdoors relax by taking the dog for a walk, or they go hiking. It's not surprising they're lost, their map's upside down! Some people like to discover historic monuments, visit museums.

Of course there are those who prefer to stay at home and read a magazine, or a comic, even draw their own comic strips! Others paint for pleasure. Whatever your age, art develops the imagination.

Either way, there's always something to do in the home: DIY in the garage, sewing, gardening . . . Those roses are so beautiful! And what a vegetable plot! You must really have green fingers!

Why don't you have a little nap? You'll be in good shape for the evening. How about going to the circus? No, that looks too dangerous. A night at the opera or the theatre? Or a drink with friends?

Perhaps you want to invite some friends over, to play cards, chess? Mahjong or backgammon? There are so many board games, it's hard to decide. If you are alone, you can play patience.

If you've got the money and you like danger, you can also spend the night at the casino, rolling the dice. But don't bet everything all at once. People only win like that in films!

Whatever you decide to do, even if it's walking on your hands or taking to the air . . . Don't forget to come back down to earth on Monday morning!

    Holidays and Celebration

In most countries, the first celebration is New Year's Day. The changing year always makes us think.

Everyone makes good resolutions: go on a diet, stop smoking, exercise more . . . But four weeks later, when the Chinese New Year hasn't even begun, the good resolutions have already been forgotten.

If you like dressing up, you look forward to carnival time. The ones in Rio and Venice are the largest and the most famous of all. There are so many feathers on the costumes, you would think that all the birds in Brazil are bald!

A lot of holidays have a religious origin, like Ramadan, Hanukkah or even Easter when, in some countries, chocolate eggs, bells, rabbits or chickens are given.

A holiday without fireworks isn't a real holiday! They're used to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th in the United States. In France, on July 14th, the sky lights up to celebrate the French Revolution of 1789.

And you can see fireworks on November 5th in England, on Guy Fawkes Night. Everybody loves fireworks, especially when the explosions make your ears ring.

Some holidays are world-famous, like the Oktoberfest in Germany. In France, there are other lesser-known festivals that, all the same, reunite towns and villages. For example, the onion festival, the tuna festival, the sardine festival and even the garlic festival!

Children love Halloween, a holiday of Celtic origin, that takes place on the eve of All Saints' Day. They dress up as a witch, ghost or other. 'Trick or treat!', the children shout, going from house to house, promising misfortune if you don't give them sweet things.

Children bring back kilos of sweets and the only real misfortunes of the evening happen to those children who eat them all in one go!

National holidays are an opportunity for the whole family to get together. Grandparents visit their children and grandchildren. Everyone sits down at the table to celebrate the reunion. Here we can see an American family celebrating Thanksgiving.

The tradition is to thank God for having given land to the ancestors and for having provided a good harvest. The meal is every turkey's nightmare! You eat roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and corn bread. And don't forget the good wine!

Christmas Day is reserved for children and the presents brought by Father Christmas. He came on his sleigh during the night and then down the chimney to leave his parcels under the tree.

They come in all colours: red, green . . . Even if there's no chimney, Santa Claus still manages to get in. He's a contortionist, not a burglar, otherwise he'd take more things than he'd leave behind!

In Spain, it isn't Father Christmas who delivers the presents, but the Three Wise Men. And it's on January 6th that they fill children's shoes during their sleep.

But the most beautiful of all holidays is Valentine's Day. All those with hearts for the taking cross their fingers and hope to receive a love letter!

Every Romeo tries to find his Juliet to take to Paris, the capital of love. And every Juliet hopes for just one thing: a marriage proposal, so that love can be celebrated each and every day!

    The Weather

In pubs, at bus stops, there is one subject that everyone can talk about: the weather.

Indeed, even politicians can talk about the weather calmly! Unfortunately, like politics, a lovely, blue sky can quickly become overcast and menacing.

When a thunderstorm strikes, the sky fills with light and rumblings. Flashes of light illuminate the countryside.

The weathermen spend years studying the weather, but they haven’t managed to explain why storms always happen on bank holidays, when everyone wants to go to the seaside or into the country. You’d think that Mother Nature never checks the date before watering her garden.

Children love thunder and lightning, but they’re afraid of it too. They know that lightning can be fatal and they hide under their beds.

In the middle of the night you have the impression that it’s the middle of the day.

You can estimate the distance of the storm by counting the time between the lightning and the thunderbolt. If the time is very short, you’d better not fly your kite!

Adults, however, spend half their lives waiting to fall in love, which some say is like being struck by lightning. But that’s got nothing to do with the weather!

There are some seasons when it rains more often. In spring and autumn, for example, showers are very frequent. Rain can arrive suddenly and disappear ten seconds later.

In certain places in the world, during the monsoon, centimetres and centimetres of warm rain fall each afternoon.

The rain waters the ground and makes the soil richer, which then yields abundantly. This explains why equatorial countries are very verdant.

However, an absence of water leads to drought and makes life difficult.

When the sun and rain meet, a rainbow appears. Tradition says that you can find gold at the end of a rainbow.

But hurry up and get the most from these natural phenomena because they don’t last long!

Hop! It’s already disappeared! Never mind! Just be happy with this radiant sky.

The air is cooler and the luminosity brighter. Quick, let’s go out! It’s time to take advantage of it.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, sun cream and umbrella... just in case there’s another shower.

In any case, let’s rejoice since everyone knows that after the rain comes the good weather.

    The Holidays Have Arrived!

At last! The holidays have arrived! You've worked hard all year and now you're entitled to a few weeks of well-earned rest.

By the sea, far from the city, you can enjoy your free time. A brochure says you can walk along the coastline or surf, if you love waves.

For the laziest of holiday-makers there is always the beach, deck chair and ice creams. But take special care you don't get sunburnt! Not only do you risk feeling very sore, but also being served as dish of the day in the port's restaurant! Lobsters are a real delicacy around here!

After a day spent sipping exquisite cocktails and diving into the deep blue, how nice it is to go back to the spacious villa you've rented for the summer!

At sunset, you can invite friends over. This is only the start of an evening that promises to be fun! Let the party begin!

The villa's kitchen is well equipped. If you want to have a barbecue with your friends, don't deny yourself, because everything's possible in this dream villa.

But who'll do the washing-up afterwards? No one? As usual!!!

Woken by the early morning light, from the window of your bedroom you can see the sea. Another day in paradise! Look at this cloudless sky! Holidays like these, you'd recommend to everyone!

The holidays are an opportunity for the family to get together. Nothing's better than a walk along the shoreline! The waves break at your feet and recede just before getting them wet.

But watch out! Waves like to have fun and you could find yourself soaked to the skin. Watch them or you'll have the surprise of finding a fish in your pocket.

And mind those angry crabs who might pinch your toes! Better take refuge in dad's arms. He's got big toes that are a lot more appetising to hungry crabs!

If you don't want to walk any more, you can play football, volleyball or fly a kite. Building sand castles or digging holes is also great fun.

But, above all, don't forget any friends you've buried in the sand, because it's almost high tide!

On arriving at the villa, wash your feet well or you'll get sand everywhere! Which is very unpleasant, especially when it's in your bed!

During the holidays you're supposed to rest, but in fact, you come home even more tired. Roll on next summer!

    Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you...' A child's first birthday is an occasion for the parents to remember the birth that took place twelve months ago.

It's only when they're older that children enjoy their birthday party. Before opening the presents, they blow out the candles. Parents explain that the tradition is to make a wish at the same time. You only have to keep it secret and it will come true.

Isn't it a lovely day for inviting friends over? First of all, you've got to get everything ready: buy paper plates, paper napkins, hats, drinks, and don't forget to make a nice cake.

Birthdays are celebrated with family, but also among friends. Just as well, the more guests there are, the more presents there will be!

At a children's birthday party, staying seated like grown-ups is out of the question. It's an opportunity to have fun and play hide-and-seek, Simon says and tag. The more the merrier!

If there's a large garden, it's the ideal place for a treasure hunt. Each team has to find clues that lead to Blackbeard's treasure chest. He's the wildest of all pirates. These children are taking the game seriously, they've even got dressed up!

For children who don't have a garden or an imaginary ocean with very rich and very nasty pirates, there are still clowns and magicians to liven things up! It's a tough job getting custard pies thrown at you all day long! Isn't that right, Mister Clown?

It's easy to find ideas for children's presents. They want toys and video games. An adult's birthday is different. Friends offer presents, but the choosing is more difficult. Instead of toys, adults get jewellery, clothes or knick-knacks.

Fortunately, most shops allow you to change presents you don't like! Go ahead, madam, open it, the present isn't just that nice parcel with ribbons!

And how do adults have fun? They either invite their friends over for dinner, or they meet in a bar to have a drink before going to a restaurant. And as it's your birthday, you're king for the evening!

After dinner, you can go to a nightclub and dance until dawn. When you're young, evenings that go on until the wee small hours of the morning don't frighten you. As you get older, however, you might find the music too loud!

If you find the day after difficult, imagine what state the Queen of England finds herself in: she has two birthdays a year! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Quick! Aspirin!

What do you have for breakfast?

What do you have for breakfast? A savoury breakfast with bacon, eggs and toast? A sweet breakfast with croissants, fruit and coffee?

An energizing breakfast with cereal and fruit rich in vitamins? A dietary breakfast with just an apple . . . And a glass of milk?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! It gives you lots of energy. You can do anything after a good breakfast!

But by the end of the morning your stomach starts to rumble. It's not long till lunchtime.

'Hmm . . . what should I have? A mixed salad? A hot dog? Hamburger and chips? A typically French onion soup? Why not? I haven't got any meetings this afternoon'.

Perhaps you'd prefer to eat seafood . . . Prawns . . . Lobster or crab? Or even enjoy some fresh fish . . .

In Italy they like pasta. And they do eat a lot of it! But since it comes in all shapes and colours, you never get tired of it.

How about having an exotic speciality? Tandoori chicken? Or some chilli con carne? Watch out for the spices . . . They make for an explosive mixture!

Ever thought of trying Japanese cooking? Like sushi, which is made from raw fish . . . and plain, boiled rice. Makes you want to try some!

What about French food, ever tried it? France is the home of gastronomy. Refined dishes, varied sauces, vintage wines . . . Crusty and soft bread . . . Without forgetting the cheeses!

Whatever your tastes, one thing is certain: nobody likes being deprived of dessert!

Whether it be a raspberry tart, mmm . . . A delicious chocolate cake, mmm . . . A key lime pie, mmm . . . Or vanilla ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream. Mmm! Mmm!

But like all good things . . . Don't overdo it!

    The Market

Once the weekend arrives, we're in less of a hurry. There are, however, things to do, since we can at last make the most of the town and its shops. Let's buy some flowers to brighten up the house. It's quite an art finding a bunch that won't wilt the next day.

You must know how to choose quality products. Even though the prices in superstores are generally lower than at the market, you sometimes lose out on quality. This explains why people are happy to find top-quality, traditional goods at the market, and at affordable prices.

Now you have to start bargaining. The market trader will pretend to be shocked. Keep smiling, it's all part of the game. But don't give in!

In an antique shop, the rules of the game are similar to those at the market: the shopkeeper wants to sell his wares at their best price, and the customer would like to save money.

The market, however, is more welcoming and friendly because the products are cheaper than at the antique dealers'. Antique dealers aren't recommended to people who don't want to spend too much!

You can find some real treasures in a bric-à-brac shop. But you have to learn to speak another language: when an armchair's fabric is 'faded', one says it's got 'style', and 'this piece of furniture is old' translates into 'this item has got character'...

Mind you don't believe the seller when he says that a table with woodworm is a bargain because the holes make it lighter! A lie detector is a must!

We go to the supermarket every week, or perhaps even every day. Superstores always cause controversy because they benefit from reduced prices by buying their products in bulk.

Small shopkeepers don't have these advantages. So they offer a different service: they know the names of their regular customers and they leave them plenty of time to choose.

Supermarkets do, however, have other strong points: there's no problem parking, every week there are special offers and the shelves are always well stocked. Quick! To the checkout! The bar code readers display and add up the price of each item faster than a checkout girl with four hands!

This customer is in such a hurry to put his purchases into the bags that he even puts his baby on the conveyor belt. Everybody knows that a child is priceless!

    At work

At work there’s no rest for the wicked! There’s more than enough work!

The proof: the telephone rings while you’re right in the middle of rereading a document you have drawn up for your superior, who wants it on her desk before eleven o’clock.

The director is on the other end of the line. She wants you to confirm the time of her meeting in Japan next week. You’ll also have to reserve her a seat on a flight to Tokyo.

In addition, she wants you to let her know the sales figures for the month. It can’t wait a moment longer.

You explain to her that the figures aren’t definitive yet. 'Never mind!' replies your superior. 'Time is money!'

You must fax the document to your Japanese partners immediately and also send a copy to Hong Kong.

You’ve got to get the sales figures together in time for the presentation at the end of the morning. It’s imperative, or you risk losing the contract in hand!

It’s time for the meeting. You meet your colleagues in the conference room. Everyone has brought their computer. There’s paper everywhere. How do you manage to work among all this chaos?

The contract which you are working on at the moment is of great importance. Some of your colleagues are very fidgety. It’s the rush of adrenaline!

The director’s been on the phone for over an hour. She’s talking to three different countries at the same time. She seems overloaded with work. It looks like she’s had a portable phone grafted on to her ear!

Fortunately, you managed to put together the sales figures before the meeting and everyone has a copy of the document you’ve prepared. They all seem satisfied with your work.

You haven’t been working long in the company and you still have to prove yourself. The slightest delay in your work could cost you dearly.

If everything goes well and if the contract is signed by the end of the day, your efforts will be rewarded. Maybe you’ll even get a raise in salary! The ideal thing would be two weeks’ holidays in the West Indies to recover.

But there’s no time to daydream, you’ve still got a lot to do. If we didn’t know what was happening, we could think you’re all making a lot of noise for nothing.

All these comings and goings, these gestures, this constant frenzy... It looks like you’re saving the world from some terrible disaster.

But, in fact, it’s a lot more personal than that. You’re proving that you can land this new contract. Either way, if you fail, another company will sign it and you, you’ll lose a great deal of money.

Your boss has announced that you won’t have time to go and have lunch, so you’ve all got to eat on the go. You’ve been brought some salads.

You’re not very hungry anyway, your stomach’s still knotted with apprehension. The atmosphere, however, is less tense now because most of the work has been done. The project’s well under way.

You hope to receive, during the day, news of whether your partners have agreed on the contract’s conditions. You’ll just have to wait! And what’s worse than having to wait? You can thus take a quick breath, relax a little and calmly polish up your work.

What a day! You began the morning quietly sitting at your desk when, suddenly, the entire team was invaded by stress and pressure. You’ve all faced up to the situation in hand and truly deserve to be congratulated by the Chairman.

    The Value of Money

What's the best way for parents to teach their children the value of money? Give them a piggy bank of course!

Sometimes they manage to convince them to save, thus preventing them from wasting their money on comics and sweets. Even so, the child sometimes gives in to temptation and spends all his money on a toy he'll forget about a short while after.

There are two ways to manage your money: either spend it without counting, or count it without spending. Save some of it, of course, but don't wait until you're too old before reaping the benefits. You shouldn't think twice about treating yourself to a present once in a while!

For most daily expenditure we use cash. If you pay for your purchases with banknotes, shopkeepers will give you small change. To get rid of it easily, it's always useful to know a coin collector!

Credit cards are used more and more. They're as miraculous as they are dangerous. Because it's invisible money, you don't feel like you've actually spent anything!

Here's a riddle! Where are we now? Why are these people queuing? To go to the cinema, a show, a rock concert? No! They're placing bets. A racecourse is less luxurious than a casino, but it still has the same effect on your bank account! It's not the horses that interest these people, but the lure of money.

Ten to one, fifty to one, a hundred to one! They're all looking for the outsider to pull off a risky gamble. Most of the time they don't even bother to watch the race. They're wrong not to! They might have backed three-legged horses which, obviously, never win!

After the risky gambles, there are the moments of madness. Apparently some multimillionaires are so rich they burn banknotes to light their cigars! Myth or reality? Well, it's true some jobs involve destroying money, like incinerating forged banknotes or notes that are no longer in circulation.

Granted, money can buy jewellery, furs and sports cars... But is that really what makes people happy?

Progress in the Field of Communications

Progress in the field of communications never seems to stop.

To write his letter, Man has used ink and the quill, the ballpoint pen, the typewriter and today, the computer.

The keys on a keyboard might not make as much noise as drums, but they're just as efficient at sending news, good or bad.

Delivery methods have also evolved: from carrier pigeons to postmen, from messengers to today's information superhighways!

This woman has just received some electronic mail. She's probably working and not writing a letter to her friends.

Electronic mail has the advantage of going where postal mail isn't distributed. Nonetheless, it's much nicer to get a handwritten letter!

This woman seems to be daydreaming. She'll send her message in a bottle. Who knows? Maybe a mermaid will find it and reply! But if the letter's wet, the address on the envelope will be illegible.

Judging by her smile, this woman is definitely not writing to her bank manager!

Rather, she's writing to her son. She's already imagining his happiness when the postman delivers the letter.

All that's left is to put on the stamp...and take the letter to the post office. She will kiss it so it will arrive even faster.

The child is very happy to receive a letter. Even if he can't read well yet, the boy recognises his mother's handwriting and he telephones her straight away to thank her.

She's surprised that someone is calling so early in the morning and discovers that it's her son on the other end of the line.

One of the advantages of the telephone is that you can immediately hear the voices of the ones you love. But a phone call is short-lived. A letter lasts, though.

Receiving mail would be impossible without the help of the postman who, every day, whatever the weather, delivers the mail.

However, the days there are bills, he could quite happily stay at home and have a lie-in! We wouldn't be angry!
I am not a scientist. I am, rather, an impresario of scientists.
