    ABCya! This site was designed for children but has lots of great activities, especially at the Kindergarten level for beginning ESL. Topics include: math, alphabet, and more.
    Activities for ESL students-a4esl This site has quizzes, tests, exercises, and puzzles in English. Also a section of bilingual quizzes in a number of languages. Topics for English include: grammar, vocabulary, crossword puzzles, video podcasts, and more.
    Adult Literacy and Technology at World Education This site is for ESL teachers regarding technology. Reports and links to ESL technology sites.

    Biography - Celebrate Black History This award winning site feature a large number of famous people but has an emphasis on black history. It is highly interactive featuring, quizzes, icons, videos, and an interactive timeline.
    Breaking News English Lessons This site offers lessons and lesson plans based on current world events. New lessons are added every few days, and the archive is extensive.
    CET - ESL Activities Online Site has activities for computer mouse (MouseMaster), grammar, crazy English, correcting writing errors (Terrible Teacher), stories and exercises.
    Computers in Action This site has lesson plans and activities for using computers with ESL students. It has both computer competencies and language objectives for each activity.

    Education 4 Kids, Inc. This is a pay site with some free parts to it. It focuses on Math, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Science lessons for children.
    Eflnet - ESL/EFL Resources This site provides activities to help the grammar, vocabulary, listening, and reading skills of the ESL / EFL student. Has photo dictionaries for a variety of topics under vocabulary.
    eflworksheets.com This site is a for-pay subscription site with free sample worksheets and online exercises. Worksheet topics include: games, grammar, pronunciation, vocab, and more. Online exercises include grammar and vocabulary. Focuses on reasoning skills and higher level thinking.
    EL Civics Great site for English Learners on a large variety of topics including: famous Americans, holidays, life skills, and more. Includes printable worksheets and great online photos with simple sentences.
    English Classroom This British site offers instruction in culture and history of some of the main English-speaking countries. These units are heavily supplemented with grammar and vocabulary instruction which include lots of images. At the intermediate level, has watching along with listening, reading, and writing skills. The watching section includes videos with a quiz.
    English Club - Learn English This free site is designed to help students learn English. Interactive activities include games, quizzes, help, and more.
    English For Everybody This site has free English language courses for beginners, elementary, intermediate, and advanced students. It also has English pronunciation course, courses for special purposes- business and computers, TOEFL practice, and games.
    English Language Space Station Site for teachers and learners. Topics include: jobs, babies and families, videos, health and doctors, money and banks, travel, describing things, education, and crime and the police. Computer lessons for ESL classes including: computer vocab, shopping on the net, researching on the net, and more.
    English Learner This site has interactive tests and exercises for grammar, vocabulary, and reading. On the left hand side click Learn English grammar and vocabulary to get to the main list.
    English Zone This is a pay-site, though it has a number of free activities within it. There are many, many topics including: grammar, idiom, reading, spelling, verb, writing, basic skills, dictionaries, holidays, pronunciation, study skills, vocabulary, worksheets to print, and more. Once a topic is chosen, activities are organized by easy, intermediate, and advanced. I would say their levels correlate fairly closely with ours.
    English-Zone.com A for-pay site which has a number of free sample activities on a variety of topics including- grammar, idioms, reading, spelling, verbs, writing, basic skills, holidays, and more. The activities with the glasses are free and the ones with a key are subscription only. Some are obviously written with CASAS in mind.
    ESL Galaxy This site has 2000+ printable worksheets plus online powerpoint presentations, interactive quizzes, and grammar/vocabulary exercises for students.
    ESL Partyland For ELL teachers and students, online and printable activities, quizzes, and online discussions. Also online scavenger hunts and internet worksheets. Quiz Center a number of different online quizzes labeled by topic and level of difficulty from very easy to TOEFL. Navigation within the site is a little tricky, so be sure you know exactly how to get around. Try the buttons on the top of each page.

    FunBrain This site has some unusual games in the Classic section including: plurals, grammar, and math. The graphics are designed for children but the content is good.
    Hiawatha ESL Computer Skills Class This is a teacher web class site with many different ESL, employment, and computer skills activities. Employment section includes sample resumes and cover letters. Health and parenting includes 911 audio clip, vaccines, remedies, and idioms. Housing includes writing prompts for My Dream House, asking for clarification, and renting and the law. Seasons and weather includes weather forecasts, natural disasters, and tornado safety.
    iKnowthat.com This for-pay site has a number of free interactive, multi-media activities for pre-K through 6th in a variety of topics: the arts, language arts, math, science, social studies, thinking games, and quizzes.
    Isabel's ESL Site This site has activities and explanations in Spanish and some in Spanish and English for a number of web/computer and English topics.
    Kansas Adult Ed Technology Competencies and Curriculum This site has ABE competencies and lessons for basic word processing, Internet, email and PowerPoint at 4 different levels.
    Kidzone Printable worksheets organized by topic and grade level (pre-K-5). Topics include: geography, language arts, math, and science as well as lesson plans and thematic units.

Beginner level topics- days and dates, greetings, numbers, time, etc.- under heading The Basics. Intermediate to advanced topics- EZine, homophones, chat room, forums, etc.

    LearningPage.com This site has materials to print and use in class- worksheets, books, and clip art. Use the samples or sign up (they claim it's free).
    LearningPlanet.com LearningPlanet is a for-pay site which has a few free activities. There are activities, worksheets, games, quizzes, and puzzles for topics including 123s, ABCs, geography, history, lang arts, math, phonics, reading, science, shape/color, spelling, time/money, and other. Some sections have a few free ones and some have none.
    LINCS-Literacy Information and Communication System Official National Institute for Literacy site for online information and communications network for adult and family literacy. Includes news, funding opportunities, teahcing and learning, events, jobs in literacy, and multimedia center.
    Literacynet.org A number of different organizations on the west coast cooperated to form this site. Learning Resources tab leads to newscast based literacy materials. Adult Numeracy Network has materials for adult math. Literacyworks creates online resources for adult learners. Links to a large number of other sites and resources.
    ManyThings Large number of interactive online activities- grammar, vocabulary, proverbs, slang/idioms, listening, spelling, etc. Includes ''Easy things for beginners'' and ''Voice of America Special English Study'' based on the radio broadcasts for intermediate to advanced.
    ManyThings.org This site has many activities related to learning the English language. List of categories on left hand side includes: Easy things for beginners, vocabulary, grammar, proverbs, slang & idioms, hearing, reading, spelling, Voice of America materials, etc. On the bottom of the homepage, there is a link to Interesting Things for ESL Teachers which includes lesson plans, handouts, suggestions for designing good web sites for ESL students, websites and more.
    Math Fact Cafe Worksheets This site can help a student create study materials for learning simple math.
    Math is fun worksheets Math worksheets to view online and print, with or without answers. Topics include: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, kindergarten, decimals, and decimal fractions. You can also create your own worksheet.
    Math Playground This site has word problems, math games, and logic puzzles in a variety of formats and levels. Some of the K-1 word problems have pictures. The Money word problems are thought provoking. SAT Math Pro word problems have video lessons in a variety of categories. Under Games there is a Fractions and Percent matching game and a Making Change game.
    Medical Literacy 2- Nutrition, Diabetes, and High Blood Pressure This site has online practice for medical vocabulary related to nutrition, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Learners can listen in English and Arabic, Hmong, Somali, and Spanish. Printable worksheets available.
    Minimal pair lists Minimal pair word lists with printable illustrations.

    Minneapolis Public Library The Minneapolis Public Library website has information on jobs and business, immigrant resources, technology classes, and the Museum Adventure Pass program. Research tools, online application for library card, and catalog also available.
    Minnesota Workforce Centers Official MN Workforce Centers site provides office locations, MN Job Bank, business services,job seeker srvices, and labor market info.
    Mouse exercises Simple practice for learning to use a computer mouse.
    Mouserobics This site is a step-by-step introduction to the mouse for beginners.
    Natural English This site provides online activities and games to help students improve learn English grammar and vocabulary from the beginning to upper-intermediate levels.
    NCTM Standards This site is the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, the official site of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. There is a list of math standards and expectations by grade, along with examples and explanations of how the objectives can be taught at different levels.
    NW LINCS This site has teacher resources, lesson plans, internet links, and more for a variety of ABE, GED, and ESL classes.
    Okanagan College VirtuaLab This website focuses on pronunciation and listening in the English language. Students can watch a QuickTime movie of the sound being pronounced and can do minimal pair listening activities. Students can also listen to a dialog, a dictation, or pronunciation explanation, then record themselves. Shockwave plug-ins will be needed.
    OZSpeller This site has spelling practice and a keyboard tutor. The spelling practice has audio, definitions, and hints and is organized by grade K-6 and advanced. The words can be listened to repeatedly as the student tries to spell them. The keyboard tutor starts with a simple 'keyhunt' game and becomes more difficult.
    Phonics Sounds Test Listen to sounds- lowercase letters, uppercase letters, consonants, blends, digraphs, short vowels, long vowels, vowel digraphs, r-controlled vowels, and complex vowel sounds.
    Quia Interactive quizzes, flash cards, fill in the blank activities created by educators on many topic areas for many different learners. Enter as a student in the Shared Activities section, then search for the subject you want.
    Quiz-Tree.com This for-pay membership site offers free samples of online educational games for science, math, English, social science, and foreign languages. Under English are activities- ESL for Spanish speakers, ESL for French speakers, ESL for Italian speakers, and ESL for Portuguese speakers. Under math are some create your own problem activities as well as answering math questions. Under Social Science are US history and constitution. Under Tests is TOEFL.     Reading for Today's Adults This site has leveled reading selections for adult learners from Level 0.7 to 8.0 in a variety of topics: civics, housing, employment, health, school, money, and government. Listen to the stories read aloud. Printable warm-up, story, and writing activities.
    Reading internet resources This site has a number of links to reading sites with a brief description of resources and whether it is recommended for students or teachers.
    Reading Practice with Word Families Reading Practice with Word Families has online stories with photos and sound along with pre and post-reading activities. The themes are home, health, and daily activity/work. Each story focuses on a word family-uck, ay, ight, ink, est, ell, ill, ug, ain, ake, ank, ock. The teacher's manual offers help and ideas. Downloadable versions of each story are also available.
    Sadlier-Oxford Student Activity Center This site provides free, difficulty level organized activities in Phonics and Word Studies. These are grade level appropriate for PreK through 6th grade.
    Saxon Student Activity Center This site provides free online activities in Math and Phonics and Spelling based on the textbooks that they produce. Organized by topic, book, and grade level.
    Science Museum of Minnesota This site has information about the Science Museum of MN, field trips, teacher resources, science, and more. The site itself requires good literacy skills, but many of the exhibits are appropriate for lower level.
    Sheppard Software This site has games and activities to practice a variety of topics including: geography, vocabulary, math, science, health, and history. I tried the Math Man (like Pac Man) and it's video game style will appeal to some learners, especially younger ones.
    Sound Machines This site concentrates on vowel sounds using minimal pairs listening. Read instructions before starting. Screen is busy so be sure you're clear on what button to click. Good minimal pair practice.
    SPCLC Basic Computer Skills Curriculum On this site you will find lesson modules covering basic computer skills- very basic computer skills, computer vocabulary, opening and saving files, skills and activities practice, MS Word exercises, Excel exercises, internet, and PowerPoint.
    Speak-Read-Write This site provides many free lessons concerning various aspects of learning English. There are no interactive lessons, but the reading activities and printable materials are good.
    Starfall This site, though designed for the very young English learner, is also wonderful for the adult English learner. It focuses on the very basics of the English language phonics up to simple reading and vocabulary. Click the word and listen. Also great for pre-literate, new computer users to learn mouse basics.
    Susan Gaer's Computer Class Activities This site has resources for inline reading/writing activities and lesson ideas. Has students stories, poems, home remedy stories, childhood memories, and more.

    The Internet Picture Dictionary This site has simple clipart pictures of a variety of nouns in categories including: animals, appliances, body parts, clothing, colors, fruits, kitchen, numbers, school, tools, transportation, and vegetables. There are online activities available which can be adjusted in difficulty. Flashcards show the word when the picture is touched with the mouse. Fill-in-the-blanks allows you to choose a category to leave blank- first letter, anywhere, vowels, and consonants. In the Stinky Spelling you can choose 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 letter words. In Straight Recall students type the words by topic or random lists.
    The Internet TESL Journal A monthly web journal which includes articles, research papers, handouts, online activities, lesson plans, and more.
    The Math Worksheet Site.com This site is a pay site with free parts to it. Create a math worksheet on a selected topic within the set parameters. Some of the parameters include: number of problems, level of difficulty, and the inclusion of an answer key. Topics include: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, mixed problems, fractions, measurement, graphing, telling time, and one hundred chart.
    The Online Writing Lab at Purdue This site offers information and help in writing in all its phases.
    The Study Place This site allows teachers to create online exercises or to find and organize ready-to-go lessons. This site is free and was created by educators in CA. Resources tab includes SCANS, CASAS, and EFF competencies. Many topics are covered including: consumer ed, family, finances, government/law/citizenship, health/safety, jobs, housing, transportation, and more.
    The World of English This is a collection of interactive exercises for learners of English to practice the grammar and vocabulary of the language.
    Tutor/Volunteer Support Resources for volunteers and tutors- plans, links, book list, and much more.
    University of Iowa - Phonetics This site illustrates with audio, animation, and video how the many sounds of the English are spoken. Students really like this site after a little orientation and practice.
    US Citizenship and Immigration Services Official US government site for Citizenship and Immigration. Click the Education and Resources tab on the top and look for the Resources for Adult Educators on the left. Also on left Civics and Citizenship Study Materials includes printable civics flashcards, lesson, citizen's almanac, and pocket Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Other tabs- services and benefits, immigration forms, laws and regulations, about USCIS, and press room.
    UsingEnglish.com This site has resources for ESL- English language references, teacher resources, ESL tests, ESL articles, and more. Includes lesson plans, printables, handouts, worksheets, and more.
    Webster's Online Dictionary This dictionary has English and 90+ other languages available. Definitions for English words. I also typed the Hmong word ''thov'' and got English translation/definition. To see list of available languages, click Non-English Dictionaries on bottom of page. I chose Somali and there was a list of words and phrases in Somali. I clicked one and it gave me the definition in English.
    Word processing activities for a language class- Claire Bradin Siskin This site has word processing activities for ESL learners at a variety of levels.

    5 Minute English This site has short easy explanations and exercises on grammar, reading, vocabulary, speaking, listening, pronunciation, writing, and more for intermediate to advanced students. Some lessons are just explanations, while others have exercises. There are also book recommendations. The listening section has dialogs and pronunciation lessons has audio to listen to and repeat.

    Apple.com If you are looking for info on how to use an Apple computer this is a great place to start. The website contains text and video tutorials.
    BBC Learning English This official BBC site has a variety of things for people learning English- vocabulary from the news, grammar and vocabulary, business English, dialogues, quizzes, and more. There are also lesson plans for teachers.
    Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids Official site of US Government Printing Office designed for K-12. Texts of historical documents, branches of government, how laws are made, national vs state government, election process, and citizenship. One section of games includes ''Place the State'' on the map.
    Better English Lessons Although this site as many general English exercises, their specialty is Business English. There are many exercises and one can leave an e-mail address to receive new lessons in that manner.

    Houghton Mifflin Education Place This is an official Houghton Mifflin site-lots of stuff. Click the Students tab and choose a subject area- Reading, math, science, social studies, or spelling. Choose a book (e-books are best), a grade, and it will link you to a variety of activities. I clicked social studies, the social studies e-book, US History, and Interactive Maps. Clicking on the legend adds features to the maps! There are also questions for the students below. In the math category, there are online, interactive games available. In science, there are simulations. Lots and lots of material here.

    Life in the White House This official government site includes information on the current president, vice president, first lady and vice president's wife, past presidents and first ladies, the White House (video tours, art, events and traditions, military), current issues and events, government updates, and a White House interactive page where people get answers to their email questions. Use the links in the upper right hand corner to navigate major categories and then down the left for more specifics. This site is fairly advanced, although the panoramic photo tour could be used by any level.
    Life-skills Math Website (For Intermediate ELLs and Their Teachers) Kate Mueller & Nikki Carson-Padilla created a website with links to ESL-friendly math sites, interactive video clips, and local photo prompts to accompany word problems for Intermediate level ELLs.     OZSpeller This site has spelling practice and a keyboard tutor. The spelling practice has audio, definitions, and hints and is organized by grade K-6 and advanced. The words can be listened to repeatedly as the student tries to spell them. The keyboard tutor starts with a simple 'keyhunt' game and becomes more difficult.

    The Internet Picture Dictionary This site has simple clipart pictures of a variety of nouns in categories including: animals, appliances, body parts, clothing, colors, fruits, kitchen, numbers, school, tools, transportation, and vegetables. There are online activities available which can be adjusted in difficulty. Flashcards show the word when the picture is touched with the mouse. Fill-in-the-blanks allows you to choose a category to leave blank- first letter, anywhere, vowels, and consonants. In the Stinky Spelling you can choose 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 letter words. In Straight Recall students type the words by topic or random lists.

Links are also provided to practice exercises under the English Learning link on the left hand side. You can search by subject or program.
    Webster's Online Dictionary This dictionary has English and 90+ other languages available. Definitions for English words. I also typed the Hmong word ''thov'' and got English translation/definition. To see list of available languages, click Non-English Dictionaries on bottom of page. I chose Somali and there was a list of words and phrases in Somali. I clicked one and it gave me the definition in English.

    Better English Lessons Although this site as many general English exercises, their specialty is Business English. There are many exercises and one can leave an e-mail address to receive new lessons in that manner.

    English Zone This is a pay-site, though it has a number of free activities within it. There are many, many topics including: grammar, idiom, reading, spelling, verb, writing, basic skills, dictionaries, holidays, pronunciation, study skills, vocabulary, worksheets to print, and more. Once a topic is chosen, activities are organized by easy, intermediate, and advanced. I would say their levels correlate fairly closely with ours.

    English-Zone.com A for-pay site which has a number of free sample activities on a variety of topics including- grammar, idioms, reading, spelling, verbs, writing, basic skills, holidays, and more. The activities with the glasses are free and the ones with a key are subscription only. Some are obviously written with CASAS in mind.

For example, I clicked ''eThemes listed alphabetically,'' then Africa, and got a list of descriptions and links to more than 20 sites about Africa such as BBC, PBS, National Geographic, etc. I then went back and clicked ''eThemes listed by grade level,'' chose 7th grade, and got a list of topics for that level, all with links.

Choose a book (e-books are best), a grade, and it will link you to a variety of activities. I clicked social studies, the social studies e-book, US History, and Interactive Maps. Clicking on the legend adds features to the maps! There are also questions for the students below. In the math category, there are online, interactive games available. In science, there are simulations. Lots and lots of material here.

Taking the free assessment test requires a valid email address (and I suspect they will advertise to you). The layout is a little unusual and navigation is initially tricky, but seems to be consistent once you understand it. Other languages also available.

Use the links in the upper right hand corner to navigate major categories and then down the left for more specifics. This site is fairly advanced, although the panoramic photo tour could be used by any level.

    Webster's Online Dictionary This dictionary has English and 90+ other languages available. Definitions for English words. I also typed the Hmong word ''thov'' and got English translation/definition. To see list of available languages, click Non-English Dictionaries on bottom of page. I chose Somali and there was a list of words and phrases in Somali. I clicked one and it gave me the definition in English.

    The Internet Picture Dictionary This site has simple clipart pictures of a variety of nouns in categories including: animals, appliances, body parts, clothing, colors, fruits, kitchen, numbers, school, tools, transportation, and vegetables. There are online activities available which can be adjusted in difficulty. Flashcards show the word when the picture is touched with the mouse. Fill-in-the-blanks allows you to choose a category to leave blank- first letter, anywhere, vowels, and consonants. In the Stinky Spelling you can choose 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 letter words. In Straight Recall students type the words by topic or random lists.
    The My Hero Project Read about heroes from a wide variety of categories- lifesavers, sports, women, peacemakers, etc. Use these students' stories as a prompt for learners to write about their own hero.

I chose Somali and there was a list of words and phrases in Somali. I clicked one and it gave me the definition in English.
    World English This site offers many tests and exercises for English language study.
    Writing a Biography or Student Autobiography Using a Bio Cube After reading a biography, students will input information on a form that can can be printed out and made into a cube. Students can also use this for their autobiograhpy.Each student can read a different biography. The cubes can be passed around the classroom when they are completed.
    Writing internet resources This site has links to a number of sites for writing and includes a brief list of resources available and whether it is recommended for teachers or students.

    English Zone This is a pay-site, though it has a number of free activities within it. There are many, many topics including: grammar, idiom, reading, spelling, verb, writing, basic skills, dictionaries, holidays, pronunciation, study skills, vocabulary, worksheets to print, and more. Once a topic is chosen, activities are organized by easy, intermediate, and advanced. I would say their levels correlate fairly closely with ours.
    English-Zone.com A for-pay site which has a number of free sample activities on a variety of topics including- grammar, idioms, reading, spelling, verbs, writing, basic skills, holidays, and more. The activities with the glasses are free and the ones with a key are subscription only. Some are obviously written with CASAS in mind.

    Starfall This site, though designed for the very young English learner, is also wonderful for the adult English learner. It focuses on the very basics of the English language phonics up to simple reading and vocabulary. Click the word and listen. Also great for pre-literate, new computer users to learn mouse basics.
    University of Iowa - Phonetics This site illustrates with audio, animation, and video how the many sounds of the English are spoken. Students really like this site after a little orientation and practice.
